Diversification of North-South Commercial Approaches

Aware of the challenges involved in diversifying commercial approaches between North and South, ESI is committed to exploring and developing innovative strategic partnerships. Among these initiatives, Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) represent a major lever for stimulating trade and development.

EPAs are trade and development agreements negotiated between the European Union (EU) and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. Designed to promote free trade and support the economic development of ACP countries, these agreements gradually open up these countries and markets to imports from the EU, while offering immediate and full access to European markets for their exports. Compatible with the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the EPA goes beyond conventional free-trade agreements by placing the emphasis firmly on economic development.

In Africa, several regions - notably West Africa, Central Africa and Eastern and Southern Africa - are implementing these agreements. For example, the EPA between the EU and West Africa facilitates investment and trade between citizens and businesses in both regions, stimulating regional economic development.
